Geneva, CH (Periodical News) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! At the end of 2020, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released the latest estimates on the global burden of cancer, which included estimates of cancer incidence and mortality in 185 countries. One in five people in the world has had cancer in their lifetime, and one in eight men and one in ten women have lost their lives due to cancer.

According to statistics, there will be 19.3 million new cancers worldwide in 2020 and nearly 10 million deaths. Among the new cancer cases last year, female breast cancer accounted for 11.7%, making it the most common cancer in the world. About 1 in 8 cancer patients are breast cancer. The number of breast cancer patients around the world is increasing year by year, and the age of patients tends to be younger. Young women also need to be vigilant.

  • Breast (2.26 million cases)
  • Lung (2.21 million cases)
  • Colon and rectum (1.93 million cases)

How to stay away from breast cancer

Most doctors recommend that a balanced diet, paying attention to body changes, maintaining a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), regular breast examinations, and maintaining regular exercise habits are the keys to staying away from breast cancer. Breast examination can consult a physician, choose X-ray photography, ultrasound examination, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Obesity is one of the risk factors for women to develop breast cancer. Medical research has pointed out that when women’s BMI is greater than 25, the risk of breast cancer increases by 17%; when the BMI is greater than 30, the risk of breast cancer increases by 37%; when the BMI is greater than 35, the risk of breast cancer increases by nearly 60%. Therefore, having a healthy BMI value is an important indicator of maintaining health.

BMI calculation method

Regularly weigh yourself, and then calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) to assess whether the weight is standard. BMI is calculated as your weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of your height (in metres) or BMI = Kg/M2.

  • Less than 18.5 = Underweight
  • Between 18.5-24.9 = Healthy Weight
  • Between 25-29.9 = Overweight
  • Over 30 = Obese
Diet guide for maintaining healthy BMI
  • Eat a balanced diet, eat 70%~80% full
  • Eating whole grains increases dietary fiber and satiety
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables for natural nutrients
  • Eat whole food and reduce processed products
  • Get high-quality protein (chicken, seafood, soybeans)
  • Cooking with as little oil and salt as possible
  • Drink water and reduce alcoholic beverages

On the other hand, although men are much less likely to develop breast cancer than women, men may also develop breast cancer! Most people think that only women will get breast cancer, but men also have breast tissue, so they may also get it. Regardless of whether it is a man or a woman, everyone must remain vigilant in the face of the enemy of breast cancer.
